That’s a wrap! Our first Farmers Market season

We have been long time Farmers Market patrons, but it always seemed like a far fetched dream to actually be a vendor at a market ourselves.

A few years ago during our wedding weekend we stumbled upon the Greene Farmers Market here in downtown Stanardsville. We instantly fell in love with the quaint market full of local vendors who offered a variety of produce, pasture and grass fed meats and various artisan goods.

Since moving to town, this market has become a staple of our weekend activities. So when our quail started producing more eggs than we knew what to do with, I reached out to our market manager and applied to be a vendor.

Our first market was extremely cold, windy and rainy but we somehow managed to sell out of chicken eggs and met a lot of new people, and friends. Despite the weather, I’d say it was a big success!

We’ve now vended a few markets in Greene including the Maybelle’s Fall Craft Fair. One thing we’ve learned at the markets it that there is a big misconception about quail eggs.

We hear things from “ewww, gross quail eggs” to “can you actually eat those things?” or “are these real?”. Of course you can eat them and of course they’re real!

Nonetheless, we’ve had some great experiences and have a few regulars now who have become supporters of our quail farming endeavors. From customers with chicken egg allergies that can eat quail eggs to customers who just appreciate locally raised, organic goods.

As our last market of the year approaches this weekend, we are very thankful for this journey and opportunity to share our quail and chicken eggs, artwork and oddities with our local community. Just like vending Farmers Market seemed like a far fetched dream, so did selling my own artwork and taxidermy!

We’re excited for the market season next year, and all that 2024 has to offer our micro farm. Next year we will have lots of new items at our booth, and hopefully we will see you at one of our future markets.

In the meantime, if you’re local to Greene, be sure to stop by the Farmers Market in downtown Stanardsville this weekend. We’ll be in the commons from 9 am – 1 pm this Saturday, December 16th!
