New on The Ridge: Certified Pullorum Tester for NPIP Program

Hello there, fellow poultry lovers! I’m bubbling over with excitement to share some wonderful news with you all.

Drumroll, please…

I recently became a certified Pullorum tester through the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS) for the National Poultry Improvement Plan (NPIP)! It’s a milestone I’m thrilled to achieve. As a lifelong poultry lover and keeper, this is one of my proudest agriculture achievements.

For those who may be unfamiliar, the NPIP is an invaluable program dedicated to enhancing poultry health and preventing the spread of diseases such as Pullorum, Avian Influenza, and Salmonella.

Now, after completing a comprehensive training and certification course provided by the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS), I am officially qualified to conduct Pullorum testing on not only our own flocks but for other backyard poultry keepers and farmers in the region.

Why is this such a significant accomplishment, you ask? Well, Pullorum disease poses a serious threat to poultry. It’s a sneaky bacterial infection that can wreak havoc within flocks, causing devastating losses.

By participating in the NPIP and becoming a certified tester, I can play my part in identifying infected birds, implementing proper biosecurity measures, and safeguarding the health of our feathered friends. But enough about me! You might be wondering how you can also contribute to the well-being of your flock and join the NPIP. It’s easier than you might think!

Reach out to your local agricultural department or poultry extension office to inquire about NPIP certification or training opportunities to become a tester for the program available in your state. By becoming certified, you’ll gain valuable knowledge and skills while joining a supportive network of fellow poultry enthusiasts dedicated to protecting our beloved birds.

Participating in the NPIP is not only about safeguarding your own flock; it’s about being a responsible poultry steward and making a positive impact within the broader poultry community. Together, we can create a safer and healthier environment for all our cherished feathered companions.

On The Ridge, we are deeply grateful for this opportunity to contribute to the well-being of our poultry community. I encourage you to explore the NPIP, embrace this chance to learn and grow, and make a difference in the lives of your flock.

Stay tuned for more updates and adventures from our micro farm. As always, I’ll be sharing valuable insights and experiences with you. Until then, keep nurturing your flocks, stay informed, and let’s continue to champion the health and welfare of our feathered friends.

If you need a pullorum tester, reach out to Tylir!
